In honor of World Heart Day 2024, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Srikanth K V from Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital, Bangalore, India, about key factors for heart health, common misconceptions, and the latest in cardiology research. Here's what he had to say:
What are the most important lifestyle factors for maintaining a healthy heart?
Maintaining heart health starts with a balanced lifestyle and finding best foods for heart healthy diet. A diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is essential. Avoiding oily foods and egg yolk can also help. Instead, focus on eating egg whites, seafood, and lean meats like chicken. Exercise is equally important—at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity every day can make a big difference. It’s also important to avoid all forms of tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, and practice stress management techniques like yoga or meditation.
What are some common misconceptions about fitness and heart health, and how can people adopt a more heart-healthy lifestyle through exercise?
A common misconception is that only intense exercise benefits the heart, but moderate, consistent physical activity is just as beneficial. You don’t need to push yourself to extremes—a mix of aerobic and strength training exercises can greatly improve heart health. Another misconception is that heart health is only about exercise, but diet, sleep, and stress management are equally critical. Gradual lifestyle changes that are sustainable in the long term are the best approach.
Please explain the role of cardiovascular clinical trials in advancing heart health
Cardiology trials play a crucial role in improving heart health by testing new medications, procedures, and therapies. These trials provide valuable data that help improve patient care and outcomes. They also drive innovation, leading to the development of advanced technologies and treatment methods that ultimately save lives.
What are the key challenges you face when conducting cardiology trials, and how do you overcome them?
One of the main challenges is recruitment—finding eligible and willing participants can be difficult. Another challenge is ensuring participants follow trial protocols throughout the study. To overcome these, we use technology to streamline recruitment and improve monitoring. Clear communication with participants is also critical to ensure compliance and help them understand the importance of their role in the cardiology trial.
What are the most promising areas of research in cardiology today?
Some of the most exciting areas of research include genetic studies that explore how our genes impact heart disease, as well as regenerative medicine, particularly stem cell therapies aimed at repairing damaged heart tissue. Wearable technology is also promising, as it allows us to monitor heart health in real-time. Additionally, artificial intelligence is being used to enhance diagnostic precision and treatment strategies, which is very exciting.
How important is diversity and inclusion in cardiovascular clinical trials?
Diversity in clinical trials is absolutely essential. We need to ensure that different populations are represented so that we can understand how treatments affect various demographics. This not only provides equal access to the latest therapies but also helps us achieve better and more generalizable results for everyone. Without diversity, we risk missing key insights that could improve patient outcomes.
What is your message to people on World Heart Day?
On World Heart Day, I encourage everyone to make small but impactful changes for their heart health. Eating well, staying active, and managing stress are simple steps that can lead to a stronger heart and a longer life. It’s never too late to start taking care of yourself, and the choices you make today can have a lasting impact. Your heart deserves the best—so commit to healthier habits and make heart health a priority.
