World Diabetes Day- Expert Insights about Care and How we Manage Efficient Euglycemic Clamp Studies

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every November 14 to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact on health. The World Health Organization theme for this year is ‘access to diabetes education’, which supports the multi-year theme of 'access to care'. There is a need for greater awareness and education about prevention, diagnosis, and subsequent treatment.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there were around 530+ million adults between the ages of 20 and 79 years with diabetes in 2021. This number is expected to increase to 640+ million by 2030, and to 780+ million by 2045.

To understand more about diabetes and the care gap that exists, we met with Dr. Manjunath Goroshi, MBBS, MD, DM, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Assistant Professor and consultant Adult and Pediatric Endocrinologist in KLE Hospital, Karnataka.

Why is there such a poor diagnosis of diabetes in the population?

Most people don’t go for routine health check up, which is important for people who are between the ages 25-30 years, and with a family history of diabetes. There needs to be increased awareness about taking up routine health check that includes evaluation of Fasting Blood Sugar(FBS), Post prandial blood sugar (PPBS), HbA1c, and glucose tolerance test

541 million adults are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. What are the lifestyle factors that currently contribute to Type 2 Diabetes?

The major lifestyle factors such as lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits, lack of sleep and stress increase the risk of diabetes.

What is the gap that exists in diagnosis and care for people with diabetes?

Once an individual is diagnosed with diabetes, utmost care to be taken about the control of glucose levels to prevent further microvascular and macrovascular complications. There should be proper follow up.

  • Reducing the amount of saturated fat in the diet

What does the future hold for diabetes care?

New drugs like SGLT-2 inhibitors and DPP-4 inhibitors have eased the management of diabetes, and a lot of clinical trials and research are underway for the treatment of diabetes.
