At Navitas Life Sciences, we believe in not just advancing the frontiers of pharmaceutical sciences but also in giving back to society and academia.
Dr Latika Sharma, MBBS., MD, our PV Networks Lead, led an insightful seminar as a part of clinical research & pharmacovigilance training on “Pharmacovigilance: Trends, Opportunities & Challenges,” for the Department of Pharmacology at Saveetha Medical College , together with the Interested Persons’ Conclave Trust (IntPCON). This event underscored our commitment to public health, education, and the continuous improvement of drug safety practices.
In addition, Dr Akash Gadgade, our Associate Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs, presented on “Precision Medicine and Personalized Treatment Plans with Artificial Intelligence” at the National Pharmacology CME 2024 event hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, highlighting the intersection of precision medicine and artificial intelligence.
In this blog, we look at highlights of both the pharmacovigilance seminar and the precision medicine presentation, to capture the immense insights and to continue to spread knowledge.
Dr. Latika Sharma, MBBS, MD
PV Networks Lead
Consulting and Networks,
Navitas Life Sciences
Dr Latika Sharma is a trained post graduate physician with over 20 years of experience spanning medical practice, military services, academia, and industry. She was attracted to the concept of clinical research/epidemiology and its potential to positively impact ‘populations’ rather than individual patients, one at a time. Her interest in pharmacology, public health, and research made PV a great choice and she started her career as a medical review manager leading a medical review team, followed by building/heading up a full-fledged PV practice. She is currently a Strategic Thoughtlead & Senior Managing Consultant, leading PV networks at Navitas Life Sciences.
Latika’s presentation on Pharmacovigilance was to a large group of over 200 participants from academia and industry who deeply appreciated the insights shared.
Pharmacovigilance: Trends, Opportunities & Challenges
Pharmacovigilance, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problems. Latika Sharma’s seminar focused on key concepts of pharmacovigilance, highlighting its critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicinal products across their life cycle.
Key Takeaways from the presentation:
Where lie the Opportunities and Challenges?
Latika highlighted the modern challenges in pharmacovigilance, including the detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), the need for robust causality assessment methods, and the varying rigor in risk management plans across different regions.
Opportunities such as leveraging technology for data capture and signal detection and focusing on vulnerable populations like pregnant women and pediatric patients were also discussed.
Future Trends and Implications:
The seminar shed light on the future of pharmacovigilance in the context of shifting demographics, new healthcare economies, and dynamic portfolios. Role of healthcare professionals in counselling/treatment, detection and reporting of adverse events is fundamental in a large and heterogenous society like India. Empowered patients, social media and digital native talent will shape the future of PV. The impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advanced analytics on pharmacovigilance processes was explored. Regulatory trends and the importance of harmonizing regional regulations to ensure global drug safety were emphasized.
Navitas Life Sciences has over 30 years of experience in Pharmacovigilance. Patient safety has always been a critical concern, and today, the remit of safety has expanded, making it a crucial component in core processes for Life Sciences companies. Consequently, our expert drug safety team focuses on core activities throughout the product life cycle to ensure better risk management and effective market interventions. In the face of growing regulatory and compliance expectations, achieving greater efficiency is essential. As a part of our end-to-end pharmacovigilance services, we leverage technology to automate processes, use data to drive insights, and improve efficiencies while supporting the safety profile of drugs.
